What is a talent visa

A talent visa is a special type of long-term visa or residence permit. It is intended for foreigners with outstanding achievements in their field and those who can contribute significantly to a country’s economy, science, or culture. Governments around the world create similar programs to attract scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, artists, athletes, and highly qualified specialists.

Each country has its own official name for this status. For example, it is called the Carte Talent in France, the Global Talent Visa in the UK, and the Golden Visa in the UAE. Similar programs also exist in the United States, Australia, Turkey, New Zealand, and other countries that aim to attract top professionals worldwide.

Advantages of a talent visa

A talent visa can open a lot of doors for you. It can help you start a new life and career, find new opportunities, and develop your skills. You can work, start your own business, and relocate your family to a new country. Compared to other immigration programs, a talent visa offers several advantages:

  • Expedited processing and relocation. In many countries, applications from talented professionals receive priority consideration. In Canada, for example, Global Talent Stream decisions are made within 10 business days, rather than the standard 4–6 weeks.
  • Status for the entire family. Many countries allow spouses and children to apply for talent visas rather than through family reunification. The spouse is eligible to work without additional permits, and the children may enroll in school or university upon arrival.
  • Long-term residency and path to permanent residency/passport. Talented foreigners are often granted a long-stay visa. In France, for instance, a Carte Talent residence permit can be valid for up to 4 years. After the initial period, you can extend your stay and then apply for permanent residency or citizenship.

Talent visa requirements

Although each country has its own requirements for talent visa applicants, they all boil down to one thing : you need to prove that your experience and skills are highly valuable. Several general criteria can be outlined:

  • Outstanding achievements. You must demonstrate significant success in your field, such as awards, publications, patents, or participation in international or large-scale projects. Some countries, such as the United States, have formal assessment criteria, and meeting just a few is sufficient for approval.
  • Recommendations and recognition. In addition to personal achievements, external confirmation of your reputation is important, such as letters from recognized experts or organizations. In the UK, for instance, individuals who have not received prestigious awards must request approval from an authorized body. In Australia, a national sponsor may be required to confirm your professional level and nominate you for a visa.
  • High qualifications and experience. A talent visa typically requires a university degree or an equivalent qualification, preferably a master’s degree or a Ph.D. Experience is also important, usually requiring 3-5 years of successful, high-level work in your field. Immigration authorities evaluate not only the length of your service, but also your career development, achievements, and management roles. However, in Hong Kong, for example, experience requirements are lower for graduates of top universities.
  • Unique skills in demand in the country. Countries specifically attract specialists in areas they consider priorities for development. For instance, Turkey is seeking cybersecurity specialists and game developers, while the UAE is focusing on scientists, doctors, engineers, talented executives, and creative individuals. Canada regularly updates its official list of in-demand professions, and your specialty may be included. Currently, the list includes database analysts, software engineers, and web designers.
  • Financial solvency. For instance, Germany’s Blue Card program requires a contract with an annual salary of at least EUR 43,759 for shortage occupations. In France, the income threshold for skilled workers varies depending on the type of Carte Talent you apply for. While not all programs require income verification, your ability to support yourself and your family remains an important factor. You may be asked to provide bank and salary statements.

Required documents for a Talent Visa

To confirm your eligibility for the program, you must compile an extensive list of documents. The list varies by country, but generally includes the following:

  • Identity document. A valid passport (valid for longer than the planned stay) with copies of all stamped pages.
  • A professional portfolio. A comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) in the language of the host country (or English), which outlines your career path, key projects, publications, and achievements For creative and technical fields, this includes work samples, research, publications, and links to completed projects.
  • Academic documents. University diplomas and certificates of additional training and professional development.
  • Letters of recommendation. At least 2–3 letters from recognized experts in your field, project managers, or reputable organizations. The author of each letter should indicate their status and explain why they consider your achievements outstanding.
  • Proof of achievements. Awards, prizes, competition diplomas, patents, media publications, colleague testimonials, and evidence of participation in significant industry events. Organize all materials into thematic sections.
  • Professional activity plan. In some countries, you must specify your plans, describing the project, goals, and expected results. A business plan is often required for innovation or startup visas.
  • Employment contract/invitation. If you have an invitation or contract with a local company, this document will strengthen your case. For some programs, such as the German or Danish ones, an employment contract is required.
  • Financial documents. Bank statements or income certificates. Even if the program doesn’t require a fixed amount, it’s important to demonstrate your ability to support yourself.
  • Additional information.
    Certificates proving you have no criminal record or infectious diseases, health insurance, and proof of marital status if you are relocating with your family.

All documents must be translated into the host country’s official language and notarized. For example, a certificate of good conduct requires an apostille or legalization. If your profession is regulated (e.g., medicine, law, or engineering), you may need to have your diploma recognized. France Talent Visa

The French Carte Talent is a residence permit valid for up to 4 years. It is intended for the 8 main categories of talented individuals and their families.

Qualified employees must sign an employment contract with a French company and earn an annual salary of at least EUR 39,582. Proof of a Master’s-level education is usually required. Residence permits are also issued to researchers at innovative companies and to specialists sent to France via an intra-company transfer.

If you have signed a 6-month contract with an annual salary of at least EUR 59,373, you can apply for an EU Blue Card. This card is also considered a «Talent» residence permit in France. An important requirement is a university degree or at least 5 years of experience.

Medical and pharmaceutical professionals may relocate to France if they hold a valid license to practice and an employment contract with a salary of at least EUR 41,386.48.

Researchers can apply for a legal residence status by demonstrating at least a master’s degree and signing an agreement with an accredited French university or research organization.

The Carte Talent is issued to entrepreneurs who have a viable business development project, an education and experience, and at least EUR 30,000 to finance their business. Startups have more lenient requirements; recognition of their innovative idea is enough, which is why many choose this route to immigrate to France for business. Investments in an existing company are also possible, starting from EUR 300,000.

A «talent» residence permit is available to the head of an international corporation with at least 3 months of experience within the same group and an annual salary of at least EUR 64,864.80.

Artists and cultural figures are issued a Talent Carte if at least 51% of their income comes from creative activities. Their monthly earnings must be at least EUR 1,261.26.

Foreign nationals or internationally recognized individuals only need to prove an annual income of at least EUR 21,621.60. Upon arrival, the individual must be prepared to work in science, literature, education, sports, or other relevant areas.

Family members can apply for «Talent Famille» status through a streamlined family immigration program. This means that they do not have to wait 18 months from the applicant’s arrival, as is usually the case, but can apply immediately after the initial application is approved.

The US Talent Visa

The O-1 (Extraordinary Ability Visa) is the primary «talent visa» in the US for individuals who have achieved significant success in their profession and whose achievements are internationally recognized. This non-immigrant visa is divided into 2 categories:

  • O-1A: For individuals in education, business, sports, and science;
  • O-1B: For artists, filmmakers, and television personalities.

To qualify for an O-1A visa, you must meet at least 3 of the following 8 criteria established by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS):

  • International or national awards for outstanding achievement.
  • Membership in professional associations.
  • Publications in reputable media.
  • Participation in evaluating or reviewing the work of others.
  • Significant contributions to the development of the industry.
  • Publication of personal research or presentation of projects at national or international conferences.
  • Holding key positions in reputable organizations.
  • Higher income level compared to that of other professionals in the field.

For artists, consideration is given to industry recognition, project commercial success, critical acclaim, and leading roles in well-known productions or films.

The O-1 visa is issued for work on a specific project. Initially, it is issued for up to 3 years, and at renewal, the authorities assess the additional time needed to complete the tasks. Applications are submitted by employers or agents in the United States. You can work with multiple employers simultaneously.

While the O-1 visa does not directly lead to a green card, it allows you to transition to an immigrant visa category over time. If you plan to move to the United States for permanent residence, consider the EB-1A and EB-2 NIW immigrant visa alternatives. The EB-1A is issued without a job offer and is intended for individuals with exceptional ability and international recognition. The latter is intended for skilled professionals whose work contributes to the national interest of the United States.

Your spouse and children under 21 can apply for an O-3 visa and accompany you. This visa does not grant work rights, but it allows your family to live and study anywhere in the country. Once you receive your green card, your relatives can also apply for permanent residence.

The UK Talent Visa

The UK Global Talent Visa program is designed for recognized and promising professionals in science (including the humanities and social sciences), digital technology, culture, and the arts. It replaced the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa in February 2020. This visa allows you to live and work in the UK without a job offer, based on professional recognition.

You may apply if you are already recognized in your profession or have the potential to become a future leader. Experienced professionals must confirm their achievements, while beginners must demonstrate their development potential and the contribution they can make to their chosen field in the UK.

The most important step is receiving endorsement from an authorized organization. For example, applications in science are reviewed by UK Research and Innovation and its approving bodies: the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society. Applications to the Arts Council of England are accepted in the arts and culture sector. If the committee recognizes your professional level, you will receive a letter of endorsement.

You can apply without endorsement if you have already received an international award from the official Global Talent Eligible Prestigious Prize List. For instance, this applies to architects who have won the Pritzker Prize, writers who have won the Booker Prize, musicians who have won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, designers who have won the British Fashion Council Fashion Awards, and IT professionals who have won the Turing Award.

A Global Talent visa is initially issued for up to 5 years and can be extended indefinitely. After 3-5 years, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and eventually, citizenship. This visa offers complete employment freedom: you can work for an employer, run a business, or be self-employed. You can change or terminate your current activity without notifying the Home Office. Spouses and children can apply for Global Talent Dependant visas, and spouses are entitled to work.

Canada Talent Visa

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is not a separate visa; rather, it is part of Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). It is designed to quickly attract IT specialists, engineers, and other skilled professionals. The GTS allows you to obtain a work permit in just two weeks and is divided into 2 categories:

  • Category A is suitable for professionals with at least 5 years of experience in their field who are hired by approved innovative companies or startups. The annual salary offered must be at least USD 57,162 or in line with the market average for the given occupation;
  • Category B applies when a Canadian employer hires someone with an occupation from the Global Talent Occupations List. This includes engineers, analysts, developers, and other IT and technology experts.

To participate in the program, an employer must submit a Labour Market Benefits Plan (LMBP) to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). This plan outlines the benefits of hiring a foreign professional in Canada. Once approved, you will receive a work permit valid for up to 3 years, with the option to extend or obtain permanent residence.

Germany Talent Visa

Germany does not have a separate talent visa; the EU Blue Card serves this purpose. To obtain one, you must have a bachelor’s degree or higher. IT specialists do not require specialized education; 3 years of professional experience is sufficient. A German employer must also make you a contract offer for at least 6 months. Your salary must meet the following thresholds: EUR 48,300 per year for most occupations; EUR 43,759.80 for shortage occupations (including IT managers, medical professionals, and teachers).

The EU Blue Card is issued for the duration of the contract plus 3 months (up to 4 years). Qualified specialists can apply for permanent residency after 21 months if they have a B1 level of German proficiency, or after 27 months if they have a lower level of proficiency.

After holding a Blue Card for one year, you can change employers without notifying the authorities. You can also invite your spouse and children through the reunification program.

Talent visa to Germany

The UAE Talent Visa

The UAE Golden Visa is a talent visa that offers long-term residence to individuals with exceptional achievements. In addition to investors and entrepreneurs, it is available to scientists, engineers, doctors, inventors, athletes, and artists. The Golden Visa is issued for 10 years, is renewable, and does not require a sponsor.

Each talent category has its own requirements. For example, engineering and science specialists must have an employment contract. They must also submit a copy of their bachelor’s or master’s degree, certified by the UAE Ministry of Education. Scientists must receive recognition from the Emirates Council of Scientists, and creative individuals must obtain approval from the Department of Culture and Arts of their respective emirate.

Golden Visa holders can live and work in the UAE. Many move to the Emirates to pursue profitable business opportunities because the country has a lenient tax system and a simple company registration process. Spouses and children of any age can be invited under the reunification program. Golden Visa holders can also sponsor an unlimited number of domestic staff.

Australia Talent Visa

Australia operated the Global Talent Independent program until the end of 2024. Since December, this program has been replaced by the National Innovation Visa (NIV, subclass 858). The NIV is available to researchers, entrepreneurs, innovation investors, athletes, and creative professionals. The key requirement is to have achieved international recognition in their field. The NIV targets both experienced professionals and emerging leaders with development potential.

To apply, you must have an invitation (nomination) from a nationally recognized individual or organization in your field. This individual or organization can be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, a New Zealand citizen, or an Australian organization.

This visa grants permanent resident (PR) status immediately, allowing holders to live, work, study, and access Medicare in Australia. Family members may be included in the initial application or reunited later. After 4 years of residence, the visa holder becomes eligible to apply for Australian citizenship.

New Zealand Talent Visa

Previously, New Zealand had a Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa program, but it was replaced by new work permit types in 2021. Artists in the arts, culture, and sports now have access to a special Talent Work Visa designed for exceptional talent. Applicants must have international recognition or outstanding achievements in their field, and their relocation to New Zealand must contribute to the country’s development in these sectors.

To apply, you must be under 55 years old and supported by a recognized New Zealand organization, such as a national sports federation or arts union. You must also have a sponsor willing to provide accommodation and financial support. Your sponsor can be an individual, an organization, or a government agency.

The visa is issued for up to 30 months and allows you to study and work. After 2 o years, you can apply for permanent residence, and after 5 years, you can apply for citizenship. You cannot include your spouse or children in your application; however, they may submit separate visa applications based on your relationship.

China Talent Visa

The Chinese R visa, also known as the Talent Visa, was created for foreign professionals whose skills and knowledge are in high demand in China. It is intended for scientists, leading technical specialists, international entrepreneurs, and experts with specialized professional skills.

Individuals presenting themselves as high-level talent must apply for official recognition from the local government. A residence permit is issued upon invitation from a Chinese company, government agency, university, or research institute.

The visa is valid for 5-10 years, allows for multiple entries, and is exempt from the consular fee. Spouses and children can also obtain visas and reside in China.

Hong Kong Talent Visa

Launched in Hong Kong in 2022, the Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS) allows foreign professionals to relocate without a mandatory job offer. There are 3 categories to choose from:

  • Category A: Individuals with an income of at least USD 321,700 in the last year.
  • Category B: Graduates of recognized universities with at least 3 years of work experience in the last 5 years.
  • Category C: Graduates of recognized universities with less than 3 years of work experience, subject to a quota.

Depending on the category, the visa is issued for 24–36 months and can only be applied for once. The TTPS offers flexibility: You can look for work, develop your business, and bring your family. Spouses are eligible to work, and children – to study.

Malaysia Talent Visa

The Residence Pass-Talent Program (RP-T) is designed for highly skilled foreign professionals who have worked in Malaysia for at least 3 consecutive years. You must have a valid work permit that is valid for at least 3 months at the time of application.

To qualify, you must earn at least USD 3,626 per month, excluding allowances and bonuses. You must also have a taxpayer identification number and have paid income tax in Malaysia for at least the last 2 years. You must also provide proof of a specialist, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, as well as proof of at least 5 years of total work experience.

The RP-T residence permit is valid for up to 10 years and allows you to change jobs freely. Your spouse and children under 18 can obtain dependent residency status with the same validity as the principal applicant’s status. Your spouse is eligible to work in Malaysia without a separate permit.

Turkey Talent Visa

The Türkiye Tech Visa, which launched in 2024, is a Turkish program designed for IT specialists and startup founders. It is intended for professionals in cybersecurity, fintech, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and game development. The program offers a 3-year residence permit, allowing participants to live and work in Turkey, primarily in technology parks and IT hubs. Participants gain access to investment platforms, partnership opportunities, and expert support for developing their projects.

Tech Visa holders benefit from tax and administrative advantages, and their family members are eligible for simplified residency procedures. Upon expiration, the visa can be extended, and after meeting the necessary residence and work requirements, applicants can apply for citizenship.

Talent visa in Turkey

Serbia Talent Visa

The Serbian Talent Visa program is available to foreign professionals with a higher education and proven professional achievements. The 1-year residence permit allows holders to work in the country or start their own business. A recognized diploma is sufficient for the application. The visa can be extended by signing an employment contract with a Serbian employer or by registering a business in the country.

If you plan to establish a business in Serbia, other immigration options are available. In addition to the Talent Visa, you can apply for a business residence permit, relocate through a startup program, or invest in an existing company and obtain an investor residence permit. To determine the most convenient route for relocating to Serbia, it is advisable to consult experienced lawyers.

Thailand Talent Visa

The SMART Visa T (Talent) program is designed for highly skilled professionals working in key sectors of the Thai economy. These sectors include IT, biotechnology, robotics, aviation, energy, agriculture, and medicine.

Applicants must sign a valid 1-year employment contract. Your monthly salary must be at least USD 3,094. Applications are approved by the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI).

The visa is valid for up to 4 years and does not require a separate work permit. The SMART Visa T simplifies reporting (annually rather than quarterly) and allows family members to obtain dependent visas and work in Thailand without additional permits.

Step-by-step guide to obtaining a Talent Visa

While the specifics may differ depending on the country, the general process for applying for a talent visa typically looks like this:

  1. Determine the country and the appropriate program.
    Assess your achievements and choose a country with a suitable talent program. Ensure that your professional skills and experience align with the priority areas.
  2. Prepare the necessary documents.
    Gather evidence of your qualifications and achievements, such as diplomas (with translations), publications, awards, letters from employers, and a portfolio. Check the program’s official website in advance to clarify whether legalization or an apostille is required.
  3. Obtain endorsement or a nomination.
    Many countries require a letter of recommendation or confirmation from an authorized organization, such as a university, employer, or academic council. Sometimes official approval from a national body is required, as in Australia or the UK.
  4. Submit your application.
    Complete the application form (typically online via the immigration portal), attach scanned copies of your documents, and pay the fee. In some cases, you may have to submit your application in person at the consulate. It’s important that your application package is complete and organized; otherwise, delays or refusal may occur.
  5. Attend the interview.
    Some candidates are invited to an interview online or at the consulate. At this stage, the authorities will evaluate your motivation and potential contribution to the country’s development. Demonstrate your willingness to work, develop, and share your experience.
  6. Obtain a visa.
    Once approved, the visa will be affixed to your passport or sent electronically. When you enter the country, you may need to register with the immigration authorities and obtain a local ID card.
  7. Get settled, and if necessary, extend your status.
    Once you are in the country, you can begin working, developing a project, and participating in professional events. After your visa expires, you may be able to apply for an extension, depending on the program.

Reasons a Talent Visa application might be rejected

Even with an impressive portfolio and notable achievements, a Talent Visa application may be rejected. The most common reasons for refusal are:

  • Insufficient evidence of achievement. Immigration authorities evaluate the significance of diplomas and awards, not just their existence. The likelihood of approval decreases if the awards are local in nature or if the publications are not in reputable outlets. It is better to provide convincing evidence of your qualifications and exceed the basic program requirements.
  • Errors in documents or the application form. Rejection is often due to carelessness, such as incorrectly entered dates, incomplete forms, or documents without translation or notarization. Before submitting, it is best to double-check the entire application or consult a lawyer.
  • Failure to meet formal criteria. Each country has mandatory conditions, such as a minimum salary, a master’s degree or higher, a fixed-term contract, and references. If even one of these conditions is not met, the application will be rejected. Before applying for a visa, it’s important to check that you meet all the program’s official criteria.
  • Immigration violations. When reviewing an application, authorities assess whether the applicant has complied with immigration rules. Refusal is possible if there have been overstays, deportations, or attempts to submit false information.

Don’t give up if the authorities make a negative decision. First, understand the reason for the rejection—often, it’s due to incomplete documents or insufficient documentation of achievements. Many programs allow you to reapply, so you can strengthen your portfolio and gather more convincing evidence of your professionalism. You may also want to consider other countries and programs that are easier to obtain residency in.
