Citizenship of Grenada

Grenada citizenship allows for visa-free travel to Europe, the United Kingdom, China, and virtually all of South America. It also facilitates immigration to the United States. A Grenadian passport can significantly reduce your tax burden. For example, you don’t have to pay taxes on income earned abroad.

Citizenship can be obtained quickly through an investment of at least USD 235,000. This is the most popular option which takes up to 6 months. In the first 2 quarters of 2026 alone, Grenada granted 1,525 passports to investors. Other options are less popular because they require more time and effort and are not suitable for everyone. These include standard naturalization after 8 years of residence and a passport by birth, descent, marriage, or special merit. In all cases, the applicant retains their original citizenship.

Pros and cons of Grenadian citizenship

Many people obtain Grenadian citizenship to permanently reside on one of the tropical islands or to vacation there at any time because Grenada is a country in the Caribbean. A Grenadian passport can also serve as insurance against political or economic instability, allowing quick access to Grenada, Europe, or other parts of the world without the need for a visa. However, citizenship in this Caribbean country also has its downsides.

Advantages

Unlimited residency in Grenada sets citizens apart from tourists and immigrants. You can enter the country even when the borders are closed. You will never need to apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit. Furthermore, citizens cannot be deported from Grenada.

Visa-free travel is the main advantage of a Grenadian passport. It allows entry to 141 countries worldwide, including the entire Caribbean, South America, the EU, and China. Grenada is also one of the 54 members of the Commonwealth of Nations (formerly the British Commonwealth). This allows for visa-free travel to all other Commonwealth countries, as well as the right to consular protection. For instance, if you lose your passport while traveling, you can obtain a replacement through a British diplomatic mission.

The E-2 visa to the United States is another advantage of Grenadian citizenship. It is a special permit for investors, available only to citizens of certain countries. Family members can immigrate with you. Grenadians are granted a B-2 tourist visa for 10 years.

Tax benefits in Grenada include no global income tax, inheritance tax, or capital gains tax (e.g., on the sale of real estate or shares). This means that if your company is not registered in Grenada, you will not have to pay tax on the profits you receive from it. Likewise, you and your children will not have to pay inheritance tax on property located in Grenada.

There is no residency requirement for individuals applying for citizenship through the investment program, nor for spouses of Grenadians. In some cases, it is possible to obtain citizenship without visiting the country.

Dual citizenship is permitted in Grenada. This means that when you naturalize or obtain a passport through the investment program, you can retain your original citizenship. However, while in Grenada, you will only be considered a citizen of Grenada, regardless of your rights as a representative of another country.

Grenadian citizenship is inheritable. Your children can also obtain a Grenadian passport, even if they were born abroad. This rule applies to passports obtained through investment as well. Grenada also allows registration as a citizen through descent, i.e., through a grandparent.

Disadvantages

Grenada citizenship can be revoked. For example, it can be revoked if a person is sentenced to more than 1 year in prison within 5 years of naturalization. Citizenship can also be revoked if the government deems the citizen a threat to the state or if the passport was obtained through fraud (e.g., forged documents).

High domestic taxes can be a disadvantage for those planning to relocate to Grenada after obtaining citizenship. Individuals who earn money in Grenada (for example, through employment or self-employment) must pay a 30% tax on any income exceeding USD 60,000 per year. Local companies pay 30% of their profits. However, you won’t have to pay taxes if your assets are held abroad.

How to obtain Grenadian citizenship

Grenadian citizenship is granted by right of soil (jus soli) to any child born within the country. This rule also applies to the children of foreigners. However, there are two exceptions. First, Grenadian citizenship is not granted to the children of diplomats. Second, citizenship is not granted to children whose parents are citizens of a country that is at war with Grenada, if the child is born in territories occupied by that country.

Grenada is one of the few countries in the world where the right of soil applies. is more common, however, in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, which offer lower costs of living and high-quality healthcare. Furthermore, unlike those 3 countries, Grenada does not simplify naturalization for parents of Grenadians.

Through right of blood or descent (jus sanguinis), Grenadian citizenship is granted to all children of Grenadians, regardless of their place of birth. To do so, the parent must submit an application to the state registry.

Grenadian citizenship is also granted to adopted children. The child will be considered a Grenadian from the date the court issues the adoption order.

Citizenship by naturalization is usually granted after 8 years of residence in Grenada. You must have lived in the country continuously for at least 1 year before applying. Prior to this year, your residence must have been uninterrupted for at least 7 years. If there were interruptions, you must reside for a total of 5 years. There are also additional requirements:

  • No criminal record.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Declare your intention to continue living in the country after receiving your passport.
  • Swear an oath.

After taking the oath, you will receive a certificate of naturalization, which serves as proof of citizenship and allows you to obtain a Grenadian passport. If you submit a separate application, citizenship can also be granted to your minor children.

You can obtain Grenadian citizenship through marriage without prior residence. There are no language or subsequent residence requirements; an oath is sufficient.

Grenada’s citizenship by investment program allows foreigners to quickly obtain a passport. There are no residency or English proficiency requirements. The minimum investment is USD 235,000.

Repatriation is the process of acquiring Grenadian citizenship through ancestral ties. Current law allows individuals born abroad to register as citizens if one of their grandparents holds or previously held a Grenadian passport. It is important that neither of the person’s parents ever held Grenadian citizenship. Additional requirements include providing proof of a clean criminal record, expressing a desire to settle in Grenada, and taking an oath of allegiance. However, foreigners rarely choose this option, as few possess such ancestral roots.

Citizens of Commonwealth countries and Ireland can register as Grenadian citizens through a simplified procedure. An application may only be submitted by an adult with legal capacity who:

  • has no criminal record;
  • speaks English;
  • has lived in Grenada for at least 5 years, or has worked in government service for the entire period (sometimes one year is allowed);
  • intends to continue living in Grenada or working in government service there.

Citizens of Ireland and individuals with «British protected person» status can obtain a Grenadian passport only after taking the oath of allegiance.

Additional requirements that generally apply to applicants for Grenadian citizenship:

  • Include a letter of recommendation from a reputable person in Grenada and in the applicant’s country of birth or residence.
  • Provide bank statements.
  • Pass a medical examination, including a chest X-ray and tests for malaria, syphilis, HIV, and the Mantoux test + a vaccination certificate.

There is a fee for submitting an application. The amount depends on the reason for the application. For spouses of Grenadians, the fee is approximately USD 372. For naturalization, the fee is USD 2,775.

Typically, foreigners obtain Grenadian citizenship through naturalization or investment. The latter method is the most popular because it requires minimal effort and time. It is one of the most popular and accessible programs in the world.

Grenada citizenship by investment

There are 2 ways to obtain a Grenada passport through investment:

  • Contribute at least USD 235,000 to the National Transformation Fund.
  • Invest at least USD 270,000 in approved real estate projects.

Additional fees include registration, due diligence, application processing, and interviews.

Eligibility for the investment program is subject to nationality-based restrictions. Currently, applications from certain jurisdictions, including Iran, North Korea, Belarus, and Russia, are not accepted.

You don’t need to travel to Grenada to obtain citizenship by investement; your application is submitted through an authorized agent, who forwards it to the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Committee (CBIC). Investments must be made only after the CBIC approves your application. After confirming the transfer of funds or purchase of real estate, you will receive a Certificate of Citizenship Registration. This certificate is used to issue a Grenadian passport.

Your application can include family members—spouse, children, siblings, dependent parents, and grandparents.

The process for citizenship by investment takes just 3-6 months.

Benefits of a Grenada Passport: citizen rights and responsibilities

A Grenada passport offers more than just visa-free travel and a «backup plan». As a citizen, you have the right to vote in local elections and to hold public office. You won’t need a work or business permit. Accessing banking services will be easier since you won’t need a residence permit or other documents required of foreigners.

You will be eligible for government social assistance, including scholarships. For instance, a 4-year medical degree at St. George’s University costs USD 173,326, but a government grant could cover the full cost.

The responsibilities of a Grenadian citizen are fairly simple:

  • Paying taxes. You are only required to pay taxes in Grenada if you earn income within its borders. There is no tax on worldwide income.
  • Military service. Grenada does not have mandatory military service. Therefore, you will not be required to join the army after becoming a citizen through naturalization or investment.
  • Passport renewal. A Grenada passport is valid for 5 years. It must be renewed regularly through the Passport and Immigration Service or the Grenada consulate in London.

You are not required to live in Grenada permanently or even periodically, and you cannot be stripped of your citizenship for not residing there. For this reason, a Grenada passport is often obtained for travel or simply «just in case».
