As of 6 April 2025, UK residents will face tax law changes that will have knock-on effects. The UK government has announced the replacement of the permanent residence regime with a new 4-year foreign income and capital gains (FIG) tax system. The changes will affect the taxation of both those already living in the UK and those who are just moving to the country.

Key updates:

  • Tightening of the tax regime: all foreign income will be taxed, even if it is not remitted to the UK.
  • New remittance tax: starting from 2025, a 12% tax will be applied to transfers of funds to the UK.
  • Overseas Workday Relief (OWR) restriction: the exemption from tax on overseas earned income for non-residents will only apply for the first 3 years under the FIG regime.
  • Tax on foreign income and trusts: starting in 2025, those not subject to the new FIG regime will pay tax on 50% of foreign income, with the full amount being taxed from 2026 onwards.
  • Inheritance tax: in future, it will be based on residency, increasing deductions for those who have lived in the UK for a long time.
  • Increase in capital gains tax: starting in 2025, there are plans to increase the capital gains tax rate for residents with assets outside the UK.
