On March 11, 2021, the European Commission will start a public consultation on the digitalization of visa procedures. Thus, the procedure for applying for an entry permit to the European Union will be simplified.
The EU executive invites citizens, communities, local and national governments to participate in a meeting and express their views on the relevance of online applications and the replacement of visa stamps with digital analogues. The purpose of the consultation is to prepare for the Commission's initiative, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021. Conferences with the public will be held for 12 weeks until 3 June 2021 in all official EU languages.
Explanation of the procedure
The digitalization of the European visa process is mentioned in the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. According to the document, the process of digitization of entry permits to visit the European Union should be completed by 2025. Applicants will be able to apply for a visa online. That is, an online permit to travel to the EU will replace the current paper stamps. The contactless form of visa acquisition is more advantageous for tourists and consulates as it helps to save time for both sides.
The coronavirus pandemic has caused the suspension of Schengen entry permits around the world. This fact has prompted the European Commission to accelerate its work on the digitalization of visa operations. Such a government initiative confirms the EU's general approach to the stimulation and reform of public services. The digital procedures are to reduce the costs of applicants for entry permits and reduce the costs of states to process visa applications. At the same time, the Schengen zone is planned to improve security.
